Free Chess Tools

Free interactive chess tools to help you calculate ratings, train your skills, and discover your chess style. All tools are free, no account required, and they run entirely in your browser.

Not sure where to start? The three most popular tools are the chess rating test (find your approximate Elo in fifteen minutes), the chess personality quiz (discover which of eight playing styles fits you), and the Elo calculator (see exactly how any result changes your rating).

Calculators

Understand the rating system that governs competitive chess. Calculate rating changes after a game and see the statistical odds behind any matchup.

Training Tools

Build the foundation skills that every stronger player takes for granted: instant coordinate recall, square-color vision, and an honest measure of your current level.

Quizzes

Chess is personal. These quizzes match openings and study plans to the way you actually think, instead of the way a textbook assumes you do.

Utilities

The workbench: a tournament-grade clock for over-the-board games, a position editor for study and sharing, converters for every notation format, and daily opening inspiration.

About These Tools

Every tool on this page was built by the Old School Chess team to solve a real problem our students kept hitting: not knowing their level, not understanding why their rating moved, struggling to read notation, or lacking a decent clock for kitchen-table games. They pair with the coaching side of the site, where Professor Archer turns what the tools measure into a personal training plan.

The tools work on phones, tablets, and desktops, store your streaks and personal bests locally, and never require an account. If one of them helps you, the best thanks is sharing it with your chess club.
